ASE Records Purchase of 15.2 Million KwH Green Power in Past 4 Years
Kaohsiung, Taiwan, May 3, 2017 – Advanced Semiconductor Engineering, Inc (TAIEX: 2311, NYSE: ASX), a leading semiconductor assembly and test service provider, announced that its Taiwan facilities in Kaohsiung and Chung Li, had purchased 4.5 million KwH green power in 2017 from Taiwan Power Company (Taipower), a state-owned electrical power utility company. Since 2014, the company has purchased an accumulated total of 15.2 million KwH (Kilowatt Hours) green power – reducing 8, 025 metric tons of carbon emissions into the atmosphere and equivalent to the carbon sequestration from 660, 800 trees.
Green power refers to environmentally-friendly energy and energy technologies derived from natural resources that replenish themselves over short periods of time, including the sun, wind, moving water, organic plant and waste material (biomass), and the Earth’s heat (geothermal).¹ By purchasing green power, households and businesses commit their green power providers to purchasing the equivalent amount of electricity from accredited renewable energy generators, which generate electricity from sources like wind, solar, water and bioenergy.² As part of a national sustainability strategy, the Ministry of Economic Affairs rolled out the Pilot Program for Voluntary Purchase of Green Power in mid-2014. ASE was one of the early volunteers and have gradually increased the amount of green power purchased annually. Taiwan’s main renewable energy sources come from solar and wind power.
‘ASE is leveraging on green power to efficiently manage our energy plan, as a subset of our corporate sustainability strategy’ says KC Chou, Senior Vice President, ASE Kaohsiung. ‘On top of that, the company actively promotes plant-wide energy and water saving programs. In 2016, our Kaohsiung facility saved up to 170 million KwH, equivalent to the annual electrical consumption of 570, 000 households and reducing the carbon emissions of 90, 000 metric tons; we also saved up to 7.6 million metric tons of water, equivalent to the capacity of 3, 040 Olympic-size swimming pools, ’ he added.
ASE shows further commitment to supporting sustainable initiatives by constructing and upgrading its buildings to meet national and global green standards. Globally, the company has 6 LEED rated buildings located in Kaohsiung and Chungli, Taiwan and Shanghai, China.³ Within Taiwan, ASE has 11 buildings (Kaohsiung 10, Chungli 1) with the EEWH rating and 5 buildings (Kaohsiung) rated as green factories4. Its K24 building is currently following the CFP PCR (carbon footprint product – catego ry rule) guidelines that will ensure the conscientious reduction in the overall emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gas (GHG) from design, planning, selection of materials, logistics and construction.
