ASE receives Distinguished Award from Taiwan’s Ministry of Labor – Occupational Safety and Health Administration
Kaohsiung, Taiwan. November 18, 2021. Advanced Semiconductor Engineering, Inc. (ASE) today announced that it has received the 2021 Occupational Safety and Health Award, from the Taiwan Ministry of Labor. ASE was accorded the Benchmark Enterprise award, which is the highest level of the annual awards category. The award was established to create a corporate benchmark that will foster high-quality occupational safety and health (OSH) protocols at business enterprises to ensure a quality work environment for employees.
ASE’s OSH policy is guided by a people-oriented approach that shapes the workplace culture and creates a high quality, safe and healthy working environment. At ASE, the company ensures that workplace policies and programs are developed with consideration of the impact from the employees’ perspectives.
Promoting OSH culture at the workplace
ASE’s OSH culture features a strong emphasis on prevention that had been established in line with the company’s sustainability development. ASE regularly reviews its risk and implementation mechanisms, and plans its training programs for all employees accordingly from the management level to the supervisory and junior levels. Evaluations and interviews with employees are regularly conducted to obtain feedback and provide the necessary support and care to improve their work environment. ASE has received OHSAS 18001 certification, an occupational health and safety standard that places a proactive and preventative emphasis on risk-control factors by identifying and assessing the likelihood and severity of hazards in the workplace. The company is in the process of obtaining ISO 45001, a new and distinct standard that will further strengthen workplace safety and productivity. ASE is also a member of the RBA (Responsible Business Alliance) and is fully committed to advancing workers’ rights at the workplace.
Adopting digital technologies to strengthen preventive controls
ASE has designed and developed a smart management system that is able to evaluate risks, control operations, and detect and react to abnormality. The system allows proactivity and raises the company’s effectiveness in reacting to first hand information in times of crisis. Since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, the use of big data have enabled the company to monitor the situation, predict trends and pre-empt any major disruptions.
Machine safety through man-machine-environment integration
ASE is working with experts to publish a white paper to reduce risks in machine handling and improve safety on the shop floor. Inspection and maintenance of machinery, and personnel training and certification are regularly conducted. At the same time, shop floors incorporate international standards from organizations such as FM Global (https://www.fmglobal.com/research-and-resources/standards-and-certification) and National Fire Protection Association (http://www.nfpa.org), and are designed to ensure functional safety and fire prevention.
Employee healthcare center
The ASE employee healthcare has been established since 2004 and provides high quality basic healthcare for all ASE employees located in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Annual health screening and counselling services are offered free of charge. The center also organizes health and educational talks for employees to help improve their physical and mental well-being, and maintain a healthy work/life balance.
Covid-19 pandemic safety measures
As the world works to overcome the impact of a prolonged pandemic, ASE continues to implement the highest standards of measures that aim to protect all employees and prevent transmission. The company has established Covid-19 testing stations that offer free and quick tests for at-risk employees and factory visitors. Safe management procedures have also been implemented at migrant employee dormitories to ensure proper distancing, regular disinfection and the maintenance of good personal hygiene.
This year, ASE has once again been ranked at the top of the list of semiconductor and semiconductor equipment companies on the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) https://www.aseglobal.com/press-room/2021-djsi/ . This is the 6th year in a row that the company has been selected as a component on the global list. The DJSI recognition is a demonstration of ASE’s ESG achievements and today’s OSH award further attests to the company’s steady commitment to creating a quality environment for its employees.
